about

Jorge Lima Barreto (1949) began his musical activity in the late 1960’s with a series of interventions in experimental and jazz music. A graduate in Art History and a doctorate in Musicology and Social Communication Theory, he is also a music critic and theorist, writing many books about music and producing radio programs, lessons, essays, interviews, e.a. In the 1970’s he founded Anar Band, recording electroacoustic compositions with Saheb Sarbib and Carlos “Zíngaro”. In 1982 he founded the duo Telectu with Vítor Rua, recording an extensive discography as well as composing music for theatre, cinema, poetry and video. As a pianist and polyinstrumentist he has played and recorded with musicians like Nuno Rebelo, Evan Parker, Chris Cutler, Jac Berrocal, Louis Sclavis, Paul Lytton, Tim Hodgkinson, Eddie Prévost, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Ikue Mori, Paul Rutherford, Barry Altschul, Tom Chant, John Edwards and Sunny Murray, performing in showrooms of cities like Moscow, New York, Cuzco, Rio de Janeiro, S. Paulo, Paris, London, Havana, Madrid, Bucharest, Barcelona and Peking. - Jorge Lima was rehearsing intensely for a series of concerts with Sclavis, Parker, Rutherford, Prévost, in a hard pianistic effort, at the time he had a borrowed Workstation Korg synthesizer in the Baucau studio. “NEO NEON is a work divided in 4 selected tunes, and multiple elementals for synthesizer, sonic inventions on humility and pride, in search of a new simplicity. It represents a minimalist concept put on practice, to leave sounds on their own – an appeal to the automatism and unconsciousness. With Neo Neon the composer/improviser establishes his hypnotic idiolect, a horizontal rhi- zome, remembering single melodic lines, discreet polirhythms and poetic arpeggios in a quasi-minimal ambience.”

I recall, still an adolescent, attending Telectu concerts with eyes (and, specially, ears) wide open, with a continuous fascination, while they were establishing their “Repetitive Minimal Music” aesthetics. At that time, i was still far from understanding how unique and special was Jorge Lima Bar- reto’s approach to minimalism, with a sensibility deeply informed by Jazz and applied with a level of aesthetic purity that was yet unknown to me. Many years after Telectu having pursued exploration of other paths, it was a very pleasant surprise to find Lima Barreto’s gesture in this recovery/ recreation of his personal aesthetics in Telectu’s “classic” years, in a pure state and also in a more complex form. Not only it is a rare document, it’s also a delight in neon tones.
